Dia Island

Dia Island is a small uninhabited island located just off the northern coast of Crete, near the town of Heraklion. It’s often referred to as “Dia” or “Ntia” in Greek.

The island is characterized by its rugged landscape, rocky shores, and relatively untouched nature. It’s a protected area known for its ecological significance and marine life.

Dia Island is designated as a Natura 2000 site, indicating its importance for biodiversity conservation. It’s home to various plant and animal species, including the Cretan ibex and the monk seal.

It is associated with Greek mythology. According to legend, the island was created by the Greek god Zeus when he turned a pirate ship to stone. Additionally, it’s believed to have been a significant Minoan trading center.

While the island itself is uninhabited and doesn’t have any developed tourism infrastructure, boat tours and excursions are sometimes available from Heraklion or other nearby towns. These tours might include opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the island’s natural beauty.
